My Impending Birthday

It's really begun to sink in that I'll be turning the big 3-0 (isn't that just the tritest, most clichéd thing to do, referring to a milestone birthday or anniversary as 'the big [fill in numeral]-0'?) in just a little over two weeks.  I decided last night that I'll attend Rhoer Spring Weekend down in the Ozarks on the weekend just before, Apr. 27-29, after all; it's not as if I'll have to pay the guys for my share of the canoe and cabin rental right away (I paid for last year's Spring Weekend in November) or as if I'll be missing anything going on here, what with Mom still in Florida.

Tempe said that she would arrange a small family birthday dinner celebration on Sunday evening, and then Tom offered to take me to a restaurant and movie on the night of my actual birthday, which would my involve cutting class, but I'm getting such a good grade in my 'Structures of Mathematical Systems I' course anyway that I think I might just be flat-out honest with my professor and tell her that a friend's taking me out for my 30th birthday that evening and that that's the reason why I won't be able to attend the class meeting.

I'm not going to dwell on my accomplishments (or conspicuous lack thereof) up to this point in my life during the run-up to my birthday more than I can help; it wouldn't do me any good whatsoever and won't put me in any better a frame of mind.  I'm just going to focus on the fact that I will have had a good semester's worth of classes nearly under my belt at that point (hopefully all A's), that even with Mom's injury everyone in my family is more or less happy and healthy, that my brother and his fiancée will be married some seven weeks later, and that I'll finally be heading down to camp staff this summer in the capacity that I've been yearning for for some seven years.  Those are good things, and are worth celebrating; forget the other crap that I haven't achieved yet.
